Coarticulation and the synthesis of british English

چکیده

It has been known for some time that the acoustic parameters of vowels and consonants change as a result oftheimmediate segmental environment (ref 1 & 2); and indeed, it has been claimed that an interconsonantal vowel is imposed on and only slightly modifies a continuous movement from the initial to the final consonants (ref 3). Whatever the extent of such coarticulatory effects, it is reasonable to expect that if we can n1odel them this will contribute to the naturalness of synthesis-by-rule. This paper outlines current work to establish a set of coarticulation rules which are being implemented in the cosegmentation phase of the IBM experimental text-to-speech system (ref 4). We shall concentrate specifically on the analysis of syllable-final stops, which is an extension to the analysis of syllable-initial reported previously (ref 5).

Effects of consonant cluster syllabification on vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in English

This paper investigates how different syllable affiliations of intervocalic /st/ cluster affect vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in English. Very few studies have examined the effect of syllable structure on vowel-to-vowel coarticulation. Previous studies show that onset and coda consonants differ acoustically, articulatorily, perceptually and typologically. Onsets are stronger, more stable, more ...

Comparison of cross-language coarticulation: English, Japanese and Japanese-accented English

This study investigates the cross-language coarticulation patterns in Australian English and Japanese. F2 trajectories between the vowel target and vowel onset/offset in the context of /d/ were plotted and locus equations were fitted to the datapoints to capture the degree of coarticulation. Three talker groups were considered: native talkers of Australian English (AE), L2 English talkers (L1 J...

Long-range liquid coarticulation in American English: a preliminary study

The sounds [r] and [l] are unique in the sense that in a word containing that sound, vowels for several syllables before and after the [r]/ [l] will be slightly [r]or [l]-like themselves. The effect of different sounds on vowels can be measured by analyzing the specific formants, or acoustic components of vowel sounds. Previous studies have found that in British English dialects, the liquid sou...

Disagreement and Degrees of Assertiveness in Service Encounters: Purchase vs Problem-Solving Interactions

This paper examined disagreement in two sets of data in the context of service encounters: problem-solving interactions (doctor-patient communication) and purchase-oriented encounters (pharmacies) from a cross-cultural perspective (Spanish-British English). We proposed assertiveness, a term that refers to both socio-psychological and linguistic features of communication, as a concept that may h...

Using a Genetic Algorithm to Estimate Parameters of a Coarticulation Model

We present a real-coded genetic algorithm that efficiently estimates parameters of a formant trajectory model. The genetic algorithm uses roulette-wheel selection and elitism to minimize the root mean square error between the observed formant trajectory and the model trajectory. Parameters, including vowel and consonant target values and coarticulation parameters, are estimated for a corpus of ...
